Lackawanna County Courthouse
The centerpiece of downtown Scranton, the Lackawanna County Courthouse recently underwent $50 million in major renovations to the 1881 historical structure. Located between North Washington and Adams Ave and bordered by Spruce and Linden Streets, the complex, like most early public structures in Scranton, was built using locally quarried West Mountain Limestone. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the building was the site of the first session of the Anthracite Coal Strike Commission, appointed by President Theodore Roosevelt. A posthumous memorial to legendary labor union leader John Mitchell was erected on Courthouse Square in 1924.
